Special Education Evaluations Workshop
presented by Karen Miranda (9:00 a.m. MT)

Please note: This workshop will be held live and will not be recorded.

Take the knowledge from last month's Edu-Talk and put it into practice! Join us for a more in-depth workshop that will help you feel more confident while interpreting during special education evaluations.

Karen Miranda M.S., CCC-SLP, is a Spanish-bilingual speech-language pathologist with Prince George's County Public Schools, where she plays a key role on the Bilingual Assessment Team. She brings extensive experience in working with multilingual learners and navigating the special education evaluation process. In addition to her work in the schools, Ms. Miranda serves as an adjunct professor and program coordinator for the Hearing and Speech Program at the University of Maryland, College Park. She is also the current President of the Maryland Speech and Hearing Association. Ms. Miranda is passionate about building collaborative relationships with everyone involved in the special education process, including school teams, parents and interpreters, to ensure equitable and culturally responsive assessment practices.

AI Translation: The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly
presented by Adam Wooten (10:45 a.m. MT)

Please note: This workshop will be held live and will not be recorded.

Generative AI translation is not perfect, but it is also not all horrible. What is the reality of AI translation, and what can linguists do to succeed in this new reality? How has the language industry changed and how has it remained the same? What should linguists know to educate clients? And what skills do translators need to adapt their careers appropriately? This presentation will be a primer for all linguists who want to succeed in this evolving industry.

Adam Wooten is an experienced localization industry executive and Professor in the Translation & Localization Management graduate program at MIIS, the Middlebury Institute of International Studies at Monterey. He is also Program Director for MA Localization Project Management in the Middlebury Institute Online. Adam entered the language services industry as a translator and court interpreter while earning a BA Spanish Translation from BYU and both an MBA and MA Translation from MIIS. He then headed up translation operations for various companies in California and Utah, including AccuLing, which he co-founded in 2013. He has been a columnist for MultiLingual magazine, a frequent speaker on localization topics, and a consultant for companies that want to “level up” in translation technology and AI.
